contraindications and cautions

Contraindications and cautions:

  • Oesophageal obstruction or previous gastric surgery making endoscopy and tube placement mechanically difficult
  • Gastric outlet obstruction
  • Coagulation disorders may precipitate haemorrhage during tube placement
  • Abdominal ascites or gross obesity
  • Abdominal sepsis / peritonitis
  • Renal patients with CAPD catheters
  • Oesophageal varices or active gastric ulcers
  • Known pharyngeal pouch
  • Malignancy at the anticipated puncture site.
  • Patients with artificial heart valves will need pre procedural antibiotic cover
