differential diagnosis includes:
- stress fracture
- neoplasm (eg, rheumatoid nodule)
- bursitis
- metabolic neuropathy
- fibromyalgia and other chronic pain syndromes (1)
- synovitis - pain is often present distal to the metatarsal heads (2)
- plantar fibromatosis (Ledderhose disease)
