risk factors for acquisition of Cryptosporidium
Several risk factors for the acquisition of the infection have been identified from outbreaks and sporadic cases:
- drinking contaminated water
- travel to less industrialised countries
- use of swimming pools and water based recreation
- contact with animals in farms or petting zoos, especially young ruminants
- contact with animal dung e.g during outdoor recreation
- contact with another person with diarrhoea, especially a child
- attendance at child care settings
- changing nappies or toileting young children (even those with no diarrhoea)
