treatment of the late stage

The 'burnt out' phase of primary erythrocytosis is indicated by:
- anaemia
- thrombocytopenia
- increasing hepatosplenomegaly
- fibrosis of the marrow
- leucoerythroblastic features in the blood
This heralds progression of the disease to acute leukaemia with increasing blast counts in the blood, often myeloid. Standard acute leukaemic therapy may be offered.
