Respiratory distress usually starts soon after birth.
Clinical features include tachypnoea, chest retraction, expiratory grunting, nasal flaring and cyanosis. If untreated these symptoms may reach a peak after about 48 hours, and if the child is to survive, the symptoms begin to resolve after about 72 hours.
In the early stages of the condition the infant is oliguric and develops peripheral oedema. Diuresis often develops at around 48 hours and frequently coincides with clinical improvement.
