differential diagnosis
Last reviewed 01/2018
A presentation similar to toddler's diarrhoea is seen in children who have had dietary restriction, especially in the form of a low-fat diet. The diarrhoea ceases when a normal fat intake is reintroduced, about 4g/kg/day.
Other differential diagnoses include:
- chronic infective diarrhoea - stool analysis should be performed to rule this out, in particular looking for ova, cysts and parasites
- coeliac disease - although this should cause failure to thrive
- blind-loop syndrome
