Oral antihistamines are recommended for simple atopic conditions such as hay fever in the breast feeding mother. Sedating antihistamines such as chlorpheniramine and clemastine can cause infant drowsiness, hence, non-sedating alternatives should be sought. Examples include terfenadine for hay fever or cetrizine for urticaria.
The intranasal route is associated with low systemic absorption.
