The differential diagnosis includes:
- infection:
- cellulitis
- septic bursitis
- aseptic arthritis
- rheumatoid arthritis:
- polyarticular gout that affects the fingers may be mistaken for rheumatoid arthritis
- if there are elbow tophi these may be mistaken for rheumatoid nodules
- bunion
- chondrocalcinosis - pseudogout
- seronegative arthritis
