lymphatics
Last reviewed 01/2018
The diaphragm is supplied by a number of fine lymphatic vessels which converge near its superior surface. Then these ascend to superior lymph nodes:
- parasternal nodes
- lateral anteroinferior mediastinal or middle phrenic nodes
- posterior mediastinal lymph nodes
- lumbar lymph nodes, a continuation of the posterior intercostal chain
The communication permits ready dissemination of infection and malignancy. For example, a subphrenic abscess may be associated with a 'sympathetic' effusion.
