common causes of proteinuria in a diabetic

These include:
- urinary tract infection
- poorly controlled diabetes - at the time of diagnosis a diabetic patient may have proteinuria which settles with improved glycaemic control.
- acute fever
- exercise - protein excretion increased.
- hypertension
- heart failure
- artefactual e.g. vaginal discharge.
- diabetic nephropathy
