minor congenital malformations

Minor congenital malformations are common, but if occurring individually, they are no cause for concern. However, the clinician should be alert to multiple, minor congenital malformations in one child which may be hints of more serious major congenital malformation.

Minor malformations include:

  • epicanthic folds
  • mongoloid and anti-mongoloid slant
  • coloboma
  • ear tag or pit
  • Simian crease
  • fifth-finger clinodactyly
  • soft-tissue syndactyly
  • Mongolian spot
  • haemangioma
  • umbilical hernia
