Classification:

  • with a left to right shunt - acyanotic shunting
    • atrial septal defects
    • ventricular septal defects
    • patent ductus arteriosus

  • with no shunt - acyanotic obstructive
    • coarctation of the aorta
    • pulmonary stenosis
    • congenital aortic stenosis
    • bicuspid aortic valve
    • dextrocardia

Treatment is generally aimed at preventing the development of pulmonary hypertension.

Eisenmenger's syndrome may complicate those conditions associated with a shunt.
