endoscopic common bile duct sphincterotomy

The principal uses of endoscopic surgical division of a sphincter muscle resides with treatment of biliary tract disease. The muscle in question is the portion of the common bile duct that passes through the second part of the duodenum.

Indications for electrical section include:

  • choledocholithiasis:
    • recurrent stones after cholecystectomy
    • acute gallstone pancreatitis
    • failed percutaneous extraction
  • biliary decompression, e.g. for stenting or balloon dilatation
  • relief of stenosis, e.g. from unresectable tumour
