The histologic grade is a guide to the likely outcome of the dysplastic changes:
- CIN 1:
- 50% resolve spontaneously
- 20% progress to higher grades of dysplasia
- 30% show no change, or change too slowly to be detected
- CIN 2:
- 33% resolve spontaneously
- 33% progress
- 33% show no change
- CIN 3:
- untreated, 20-30% develop carcinoma within 10 years
- treated, 12% develop carcinoma within 30 years
