x) ACHIEVING A SHARED UNDERSTANDING - INCORPORATING THE PATIENT'S PERSPECTIVE

Aims: To provide explanations and plans that relate to the patient's perspective of the problem To discover the patient's thoughts and feelings about the information given To encourage interaction, not one-way transmission

40. Patient's illness framework: relates to the patient's previously elicited ideas, concerns and expectations.

41. Interaction: provides opportunities and encourages the patient to contribute, ask questions, seek clarification or express doubts; responds appropriately.

42. Cues: picks up verbal and non-verbal cues such as the patient's need to add information or ask questions, information overload or distress.

43. Effect: elicits, acknowledges and addresses feelings, reactions and beliefs about information and terms used.
