- selectively block the action of leukotrienes on the respiratory tract.
Leukotriene antagonists result in a reduction in mucus secretion, vascular
permeability, and bronchoconstriction. There is also a reduction in eosinophil
recruitment. Leukotriene antagonists result in an inhibition in early and
late stage bronchoconstriction - indicating both a bronchodilatory and anti-inflammatory
role
- there is no evidence to suggest that leukotriene antagonists provide protection against aspirin- or NSAID - induced anaphylaxis. Neither is there evidence that leukotriene antagonists benefit aspirin-sensitive asthmatics more than those without aspirin sensitivity.
