choice of dialysate
Last reviewed 01/2018
The main variables in dialysate composition are:
- sodium concentration - 130 to 140 mM
- glucose concentration - 1.5 to 6%; 1.5% is approximately isotonic with plasma
- potassium - if required
Guidelines:
- both blood pressure and volume are normal or low:
- 140 mM sodium and 1.5% glucose
- blood pressure or volume are raised:
- 135 mM sodium and 3% glucose
- both blood pressure and volume are raised:
- 130 mM sodium and 6% glucose
If the metabolic consequences of glucose overload become problematic, substitute another osmotically active solute and/or amend diet.
