metabolic myopathies

Any patient presenting with proximal weakness should be carefully screened for any metabolic cause of a myopathy.
Possible causes of metabolic myopathy include:
- thyroid disease:
- hyperthyroidism
- hypothyroidism
- corticosteroid excess
- iatrogenic
- Cushing's disease
- Conn's syndrome
- biochemical abnormalities:
- hypokalaemia
- hyperkalaemia
- hypercalcaemia
- hypomagnesaemia
- abnormalities in energy producing metabolic pathways
- glycogen storage disorders
- diabetes mellitus
- multiple endocrine neoplasia type IIB
metabolic myopathy in hypothyroidism
metabolic myopathy in thyrotoxicosis
metabolic myopathy with corticosteroids
metabolic myopathy in abnormal energy metabolism
hypokalaemic periodic paralysis
