Indications:

  • Varicella-zoster infections in immunocompromised patients
  • Herpes simplex infections of the eye

Cautions:

  • reduce dose in renal impairment
  • FBC required
  • pregnancy

Side-effects:

  • anorexia
  • tremor, ataxia and dizziness
  • decreased haematocrit, WCC and platelet count
  • nausea and vomiting
  • confusion
  • diarrhoea

Routes of administration:

  • Slow i.v. infusion
