drug-induced hypothyroidism

  • long term therapy with iodine - for example in kelp preparations or expectorants
  • iodine containing drugs:
    • amiodarone
  • antithyroid drugs:
    • carbimazole
    • propylthiouracil
  • lithium carbonate
  • aminoglutethimide
  • interferons
  • interleukin-2

Hypothyroidism is more likely in patients with a previous history of thyroid disorders or with positive thyroid antibodies.
