Renal vein thrombosis in adults is most common in nephrotic syndrome, occuring in 1 to 2% of clinically diagnosed nephrotic syndrome. It is especially common in nephrotic syndrome due to

  • amyloidosis
  • membranous glomerulonephritis
  • membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis

In children it is rare, but may be secondary to severe illness, including:

  • asphyxia
  • sepsis
  • dehydration
