- there is a low likelihood of pregression to overt hyperthyroidism from subclinical hyperthyroidism - rate is <= 4% per year in autonomous thyroid nodules
- it is most common for progression to occur in those with undetectable TSH in a sensitive assay - in patients with subnormal but not fully suppressed TSH hormone concentrations then there is often a return to normal levels
