Thrombosis or embolism of the inferior mesenteric artery is a common cause of ischaemic colitis:
- thrombosis is often associated with ulceration of an atheromatous plaque
- emboli often originate in the heart:
- from the atria in patients with atrial fibrillation
- from mural thrombus post myocardial infarction
