- most patients are asymptomatic except for some mucoid discharge, the start of which, can usually be dated to childbirth or commencement of oral contraception
- an erosion is not painful and does not cause dyspareunia; however a patient may present with bleeding or infection
- diagnosis is confirmed by speculum examination. There is a red ring around the os. This is because the endocervical mucous columnar epithelium has extended over the vaginal cervix (ectocervix)
