complications

These complications of a para-oesophageal hiatus hernia include:
- ulceration - acute or chronic gastric ulcer in the pouch or riding over the diaphragmatic margins - "riding ulcer." Caused by stasis in the gastric pouch and resultant erosion of the gastric mucosa.
- haemorrhage - due to bleeding or perforation of the ulcer
- incarceration
- volvulus
- obstruction - usually at the oesophagogastric junction
- strangulation - in advanced disease may involve small and large bowel, and spleen in addition to stomach
- ischaemia
- infarction
