This includes:
- liver disease - mild/moderate liver disease is distinguishable from DIC by having normal fibrinogen levels and normal or slightly reduced platelets; severe disease is less difficult to distinguish
- vitamin K deficiency - fibrinogen level and platelet count unaffected
- sepsis - fibrinogen level usually normal
- thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura - fibrinogen level and other coagulation tests usually normal
