Roundworms are relatively uncommon in the UK; however, they represent a major problem in many areas in the world.

Classification:

  • gut-dwelling nematodes of humans:
    • confined to the gut:
      • enterobiasis - threadworms
      • trichuriasis - whipworm
    • with tissue migration:
    • hookworms - Ancylcostoma duodenale; Necator americanus
      • ascariasis
      • strongyloides
  • gut-dwelling nematodes of animals with tissue spread in humans - toxocariosis
  • tissue nematodes - worms of human origin dwelling in human tissues - filiarial worms
