causes of persistent traveller's diarrhoea

Causes include:
- bacteria:
- salmonellosis (usually causes an acute illness)
- Campylobacter infection (usually causes an acute illness)
- intestinal tuberculosis
- protozoa:
- giardiasis
- cryptosporidiosis
- amoebiasis
- helminths:
- strongyloidosis
- colonic schistosomiasis
- others:
- postinfectious irritable bowel syndrome
- inflammatory bowel syndrome
- tropical sprue
Bloody diarrhoea suggests an invasive organism (e.g. C. jejuni, Shigella sp., Salmonella sp.). However these organisms may cause a persistent diarrhoea that is not watery.
salmonellosis excluding enteric fevers (S. Typhi and S. Paratyphi)
