- pemphigus vulgaris:
- most common
- characterised by shallow erosions and fragile blisters on the flexures
- pemphigus vegetans:
- has striking papillomatous proliferations in skin flexures
- pemphigus foliaceus:
- superficial erosions and short-lived blisters
- is endemic in parts of South America and only affects adults
- pemphigus erythematosus:
- blisters arise on sun-exposed parts
- has features of lupus erythematosus with anti-nuclear antibodies
