sacrum (fracture)
Last reviewed 01/2018
Fracture of the sacrum may occur as a result of a blow from behind or a fall. Displaced fractures should be reduced if possible.
Rarely the nerves of the sacral plexus may be damaged. There may be features of sciatic irritation e.g. weak knee flexion with pain below the knee. There may be pain or loss of sensation up the back of the leg and around the anus.
The patient should be advised to use a U shaped cushion when sitting.
