Indications for cholecystectomy include:

  • recurrent attacks of biliary pain - otherwise it is hard to tell if the gallstones are causing the symptoms
  • long-term indigestion
  • complications such as acute cholecystitis, empyema or perforation

There are no indications for removal of asymptomatic stones, except perhaps in diabetics, or, if there is a reasonable likelihood of future complications or symptoms.
