  • osteoarthritis of the first carpometacarpal joint
  • stiffness - which may develop with any hand injury. To minimise this:
    • encourage the patient to move and to exercise the fingers
    • elevate the hand to control swelling
    • use the minimum splintage necessary
    • any immobilisation must be in the position of splintage with the ligaments taut
    • do not splint with the metacarpophalangeal joints extended
