About 10% of infected foetuses present with severe damage at or shortly after birth - neurological damage, cerebral calcification, hydrocephalus or chorioretinitis.
The calcification is said to be diffuse, as distinct from the more localised calcification in cytomegalovirus.
The remaining 80 - 90% develop some stigmata of toxoplasma infection months or years later - for example, bilateral visual loss due to chorioretinitis. Systemic infection, for example with hepatosplenomegaly, may occur.
