rape
Last reviewed 01/2018
Assessment of male or female rape victims is a specialised job which should only be undertaken by trained police surgeons. Forensic examination uses techniques and procedures beyond the experience of most GPs.
Some patients will first see their GP rather than go to a police station. Without losing the patient's trust, every effort should be made to encourage the patient to contact the police immediately, perhaps accompanied by a friend or other advocate such as a social worker.
If all persuasion fails, the GP should make an assessment and give the patient the appropriate advice.
