appearance and behaviour

  • dishevelled and unshaven
  • cares for self only when others insist
  • socially withdrawn
  • odd and awkward behaviour such as talking to strangers or shouting obscenities in public
  • may hoard objects
  • in catatonic schizophrenia there may be periods of stupor or excitement

There may be repeated odd movements:

  • those that are not goal directed are called stereotypies
  • those that are goal directed are called mannerisms

There may be a disorder of muscle tone called waxy flexibility.
