ultrasound (breast)
Last reviewed 06/2022
Real-time ultrasound distinguishes different types of breast tissue on the basis of differences in acoustic impedance. In skilled hands, it is may be used to detect carcinoma, especially in young women and during pregnancy.
Malignancy may be indicated by:
- a solid mass with irregular margins and heterogenous internal echoes
- surrounding flare of bright echoes
If a lesion is impalpable or small, ultrasound may be used to direct a fine needle biopsy.
