aspergillus brain abscess

Aspergillus usually enters the brain following chronic sinusitis and subsequent skull osteomyelitis. Rarely the portal of entry is the lungs.

Aspergillus does not cause meningitis.

Diagnosis is usually made following biopsy of the abscess.

Treatment consists of:

  • surgical debridement
  • intravenous amphoteracin B
  • flucytosine
