- variation in apo CIII and lipoprotein lipase genes, and reduced activity of lipoprotein lipase, are implicated in hypertriglyceridaemia and combined lipidaemia.
- apo CIII gene is found on chromosome 11 as part of a cluster with apo A1 and apo AIV. Apo CIII inhibits lipoprotein lipase.
- variants of apo CIII and lipoprotein lipase predispose to a defective clearance of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins, and so mean there is potential to develop hypertriglyceridaemia or combine hyperlipidaemia.
