Reduction under general anaesthesia.
An x-ray must be taken after the reduction to confirm the reduction and exclude a fracture.
The reduction will result in a stable joint but, because of the severe injury that the hip has undergone, it needs to be rested for an initial period. The simplest method of ensuring this initial rest period is to apply and maintain traction for 3 weeks.
The patient should exercise as soon as pain allows. After the initial 3 week period the patient is allowed to walk on crutches.
