Idiopathic hypercalciuria:
- low calcium diet:
- restrict consumption of dairy produce - milk, cream, cheese
- ensure adequate fluid intake - 2-3 litres per day
- thiazide diuretics:
- reduce urinary calcium excretion
- physiological mechanism uncertain
- calcium binders:
- oral phosphates e.g. sodium cellulose phosphate 5 gms before meals
- sodium cellulose phosphate may cause secondary hyperoxaluria and magnesium depletion; thus dietary restriction of oxalate and magnesium supplementation should accompany treatment
Secondary hypercalciuria:
- adequate hydration
- treat underlying cause
