Signs in the hands may reflect pathology in various abdominal systems:

  • chronic liver disease:
    • palmar erythema
    • leukonychia
    • asterixis
    • Dupuytren's contracture
    • clubbing in cirrhosis

  • inflammatory bowel disease:
    • clubbing
    • pyoderma gangrenosum on the dorsum of the hand

  • gut pathology causing iron deficiency anaemia:
    • koilonychia
    • pale skin creases

  • renal disease with uraemia:
    • twitch and tremor
    • peripheral neuropathy
