The oral cholecystogram may show:
- filling defects - if the function of the gall bladder is normal, then the gallbladder is visible as a radiopaque viscus and any stones are seen as filling defects.
- if the gall bladder fails to opacify then this may be due to:
- obstruction of the gall bladder by a stone blocking the gall bladder neck; or,
- gall bladder is unable to concentrate bile as a result of inflammatory damage to the gall bladder wall.
If a fatty meal, e.g. chocolate, is given then the normal gallbladder contracts and this can be seen radiologically.
If there is inflammatory damage to the wall of the gallbladder then the gallbladder fails to contract.
