Possible causes of recurrent abdominal pain in childhood include:

  • psychological or non-organic, accounting for the majority of cases
  • constipation
  • urinary tract infection
  • coeliac disease
  • abdominal migraine
  • giardia and other chronic infection
  • irritable bowel syndrome
  • inflammatory bowel disease

Other rare possibilties include:

  • pancreatitis
  • cholecystitis
  • lead poisoning
  • porphyria
  • ovarian cysts
