Site is important because certain skin diseases tend to have characteristic sites.

Thus:

  • extensor surfaces of the elbows and knees, also the scalp, nails and gluteal cleft is typical of psoriasis
  • flexor surfaces such as the antecubital and popliteal fossae implies atopic eczema
  • scalp, eyebrows and nasolabial folds implies seborrhoeic eczema
  • lesions on exposed skin imply conditions caused by sun exposure, ranging from malignancy to drug induced rashes. Sparing of shielded sites may be seen.
