management

Treatment depends on cause.
- if no cause is identified then management is controversial - seek expert advice
- many experience spontaneous recovery within the first 3 days.
- few recover gradually over a 1 or 2 weeks
- 15 percent experience a gradually worsening hearing loss
- many methods have been used
- oral corticosteroid therapy
- shown to be effective in few studies
- hyperbaric oxygen
- antivirals
- herpes family viruses have been frequency associated with sudden hearing loss
- vasodilators
- carbogen inhalation
- a mixture of oxygen (95%) and carbon dioxide (5%)
- helps better air and blood flow inside the ear
- ganglion blockade
- dextran infusion
- oral corticosteroid therapy
