Treatment depends on cause.

  • if no cause is identified then management is controversial - seek expert advice
  • many experience spontaneous recovery within the first 3 days.
  • few recover gradually over a 1 or 2 weeks
  • 15 percent experience a gradually worsening hearing loss
  • many methods have been used
    • oral corticosteroid therapy
      • shown to be effective in few studies
    • hyperbaric oxygen
    • antivirals
      • herpes family viruses have been frequency associated with sudden hearing loss
    • vasodilators
    • carbogen inhalation
      • a mixture of oxygen (95%) and carbon dioxide (5%)
      • helps better air and blood flow inside the ear
    • ganglion blockade
    • dextran infusion
