Oesophago-gastro-duodenoscopy is a procedure that involves swallowing a flexible endoscope. It is widely performed as an out-patient procedure. The patient is generally given sedation before the procedure, e.g. intravenous diazepam or midazolam. The pharynx is anaesthetized with local anaesthetic.
Pre-op measures include:
- fasting from midnight
- consent
- patient should be warned that cannot drive for 12-24h after endoscopy
- insert an IVI line
- arrange follow-up
