The right crus is characterised by:

  • origin on anterior surface of upper three lumbar vertebral bodies and their interposed intervertebral discs
  • tendon fibres pass superiorly and to the left to form a sling around the oesophagus at its aperture through the diaphragm
  • muscle fibres merge beyond the oesophagus, pass superoanteriorly and insert into the central tendon of diaphragm
  • wider and longer than left crus
