Histamine is a basic amine widely distributed in the body. It has a number of roles including the early stages of inflammation, type I hypersensitivity and modulation of gastric acid secretion.

There are at least two types of histamine receptor subtype which are targets for pharmacological intervention. Equally, histamine release can be minimized clincally by the use of mast cell stabilizers.
